This past weekend I hosted a summer garden dinner party for ten of my girlfriends, and I am still floating on the high of it. There is just something about gathering the people you love around a beautiful table full of fresh, seasonal food that fills my whole heart. From the grazing board to the strawberry cake, every single bite leaned into the flavors of summer, and I cannot wait to walk you through exactly how I pulled it all together. So whether you are planning your own garden party or just dreaming about one, here are all my tips, the full menu, and where to find every recipe. 🌿

My Best Tips for Hosting a Stress-Free Dinner Party
Hosting can feel overwhelming, but over time I have learned a few tricks that let me actually enjoy the night instead of running around frazzled. Here are the ones I lean on every single time.
1. Always Cook with Seasonal Produce
This is my number one tip, hands down. When you build your menu around what is in season, everything just tastes better, costs less, and feels more special. For this summer party I leaned all the way into the farmer’s market: zucchini, strawberries, asparagus, peaches, stone fruit, anything fresh and vibrant I could get my hands on. Cooking seasonally takes the pressure off because the ingredients are already at their best, so you barely have to do anything to make them shine. My whole goal was to keep the menu light, fresh, and full of those bright summer flavors.

2. Map Out Your Serveware the Day Before
This little trick is a total game changer. The day before the party, I lay out every serving dish, bowl, and platter I plan to use, then I place a Post-it note in each one labeling exactly what food will go there. That way, when the chaos of the day arrives, I am not standing in my kitchen wondering what to serve the salad in. Everything has a home, and I can just fill and go. It keeps me organized and saves me so much day-of stress.
3. Choose a Make-Ahead Dessert
I am known for my baking, so of course dessert always has to make an appearance. But here is the thing: desserts are time consuming, and the day of hosting I really want to focus on the cooking, the styling, and making everything beautiful. So I always pick a dessert I can make the day before. It is one less thing to worry about, and a chilled, set dessert is often even better the next day.
4. Set Up the House the Day Before
Along the same lines, I fully set up my house the day before the party. The table, the linens, the serveware, the little touches, all of it is ready to go before I go to bed. That way, when guests start arriving, I am relaxed and present instead of scrambling to put out napkins.
5. Always Have a Weather Backup Plan
Here is a lesson I learned the hard way. I live in Ohio, where the weather is anything but predictable, and about thirty minutes before my guests arrived, it started storming. We had to quickly pivot and move the entire party inside. Thankfully, I have a table that extends, so we pulled it out and still fit all ten girls comfortably. Moral of the story: always have an indoor backup ready, just in case Mother Nature has other plans. I am already dreaming of hosting another one later this summer so I can finally enjoy the outdoor space I worked so hard on.
The Summer Garden Party Menu
I wanted every course to feel light, fresh, and full of summer. Here is everything I served, from the grazing board all the way to dessert.
Starters
- Summer Grazing Board. You cannot go wrong starting with a beautiful spread. I built mine around a mix of cheeses (brie, goat cheese, a green goddess gouda I found at Trader Joe’s, and a white cheddar), then piled on cured meats like salami and prosciutto. To keep it light and summery, I added tons of fresh berries and kiwi, plus an assortment of crackers. The star find was a strawberry jalapeño cracker from Trader Joe’s that was the perfect sweet-and-spicy bite. My goal was a good spread of everything so there was a little something for everyone to nibble on as they arrived.
- Honey Lemon Whipped Ricotta Crostini. This one was an absolute showstopper. Creamy whipped ricotta swirled with honey and bright lemon, spread over toasted slices of French baguette. It is simple, elegant, and tastes like summer in one bite.
- Stone Fruit and Burrata Salad. I am obsessed with how this turned out. Juicy peaches, plums, apricots, and nectarines paired with creamy burrata and fresh basil from my garden. It is the kind of dish that looks stunning on the table and lets that gorgeous summer stone fruit be the star.
Main Course
- Lemon Basil Spatchcock Chicken. I took my go-to spatchcock chicken recipe and gave it a fresh summer twist with lemon and basil, then roasted it over a bed of baby tomatoes that burst and turn jammy in the pan. Spatchcocking is my favorite way to roast a chicken because it cooks faster and more evenly, and the skin gets perfectly crispy.
- Roasted Summer Vegetables. To round out the plate, I roasted squash, zucchini, asparagus, and yellow onion until tender and caramelized. Simple, seasonal, and the perfect light side to go with the chicken.
Dessert
- Japanese-Style Strawberry Cake. Of course I had to end on something fresh and fruity, and this cake was the perfect finish. It is a light and fluffy cake flour sponge layered with barely sweet whipped cream and two full pints of fresh strawberries. Best of all, it is my make-ahead dessert hero, since I baked and assembled it the day before. It melts in your mouth and is the dreamiest way to celebrate summer.
The Drinks
- Cucumber Basil Gin Spritzer. Light, herby, and so refreshing, this was the perfect welcome drink for a summer evening. Crisp cucumber and fresh basil from my garden come together with gin and bubbles for something that tastes like a garden in a glass.
- Strawberry Rosé Sangria. Sweet, fruity, and dangerously easy to sip. This one was loaded with fresh strawberries and rosé, and it disappeared fast. It is the kind of drink that feels fancy but could not be simpler to throw together.
I made both of these as batch cocktails ahead of time so I never had to play bartender, and I had wine on hand for anyone who wanted it. Batch cocktails are my secret to actually enjoying my own party instead of standing at the drink station all night.

A Little Note on My Garden
This is the very first year I have a real, physical garden, and I am so proud of it. I spent two full days gardening, updating everything, and making sure my flower beds were beautiful for this party. The fresh basil in all of these recipes came straight from my garden, which made it feel that much more special. It is still early in June, so basil is about all I am harvesting right now, but later this summer I will have heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, green onions, carrots, bell peppers, and jalapeños. I genuinely cannot wait to cook with all of it and host another garden party once everything is in full bloom.
This summer garden dinner party reminded me exactly why I love hosting. It is not about everything being perfect (the storm certainly made sure of that), it is about gathering the people you love, sharing beautiful food, and making memories. If you take just one thing from this post, let it be this: plan ahead, cook with the season, and give yourself the grace to actually enjoy the night.
If you try any of these recipes or host your own garden party, I would love to see it! Snap a photo and tag me so I can follow along. Happy hosting, friends. 🌿🍓
